About Steam Engine OKl27 including pictures a model of such an engine that is located in the Warsaw Train Museum.

steam engine oki27

The OKl27 steam engine maintains a special place in the railroad history of Poland as the OKl27 steam engine was the first locomotive completely designed and manufactured in Poland.

It was reliable, well-liked, and enjoyed many years of reliable operations on railroads around Europe. The successor to the postwar locomotive steam engine was TKt48.

The engine OKl27 was manufactured on the order of the Polish Ministry of communications based on a design presented by Cegielski factory in Poznan, and approved by PKP ( the Polish Railroad) in 1927.

The rationale for its construction was a shortage of passenger locomotives that could service suburban lines.

By 1928 the factory delivered four locomotives and subsequently produced an additional 118. They ceased production in 1933.

This type locomotive was designed for passenger services on suburban lines. It, being a tank locomotive, could run at full speed in both directions and was capable of fast startup and frequent stops.

Generally, due to instability, the locomotive generally did not run above 50 km/h.

It was a well-designed locomotives and used by the Polish railways for about 50 years. The last OKl27 (OKl27 – 10) was used for switching at the Skierniewice locomotive depot until 1979. It is still there, though not in operable condition.

During the Second World War engines were taken by both the Germans and Russians. They were scattered around Europe with engines being found in Austria Czechoslovakia and France.

There are four surviving specimens:

OKl27-10 – Location – Skierniewice Locomotive Depot
