Germination Guide

Teloxys aristata Seafoam seeds will usually germinate in 7 to 21 days. Normally they will only germinate with light so surface sow.

Sow Teloxys aristata Seafoam seeds on the surface of a general purpose, unfertilized seed sowing mix at about 23°C.

Sow on the surface of moist compost, use a translucent cover to allow light in and to keep the compost humid and warm (do not place in direct sunlight)

Try to sow sparsely, Teloxys aristata is prone to damping off, and will grow spindly if sown too close together.

From the cold, dry Gobi desert, Seafoam likes humidity to germinate, followed by dry conditions once established.

And now, here is a more complex way to do it.

If you realize what you need to count down for a box with seafoam, then it pays to delve into growing it yourself. For less than half the money you will soon be a variety of plants. The first year and the first time you are going to “try”, is usually the most difficult. It’s very different model build what you’re doing, and that not everyone in the fingers. But anyone can learn it!

2007 started with a disappointing result. Three weeks in April was sown outdoors, there began to grow weeds, so to see the Teloxis did not. Yet just go weeding the weeds. Had the young Zeeschuimplantjes not expect leaves and thought it was weeds … no one plant survived. We let down not stop there.
In 2008, it went a bit better, in 2009 was a good yield and this 2010 season has come spontaneously many seeds that had fallen from the plant last year during harvest and has been lying in the garden. Without that looked back to was, and placed without any protection to have, again there was a garden full of expensive “weeds”, Teloxis Aristata!

In Southern Europe, this plant grows in the wild, where it is referred to as weeds.

Here in the UK we can also grow them, but with some extra care

What is the best environment for the cultivation of seafoam?

If you have a garden that is an advantage, especially if it is sunny. Do not have a garden, it is within possible, only with less good results. The plants need a lot of light. Put them near a window, they grow toward the light, so they get somewhat crooked, sterile, elongated stems. Also within plants less ‘full’ than outdoor plants.

It all starts with some seed

Note that the older the seed, the less good turnout. Make sure you have the seed inside before sowing and growing season, so the end of April, beginning in early May and late August, takes early September.

Indoor and mighty:

seed tray; flower pots; planters; seed and cutting soil; potting soil; skewers; planting sticks.

Outdoor Growing:

tunnel film; chicken wire or PVC pipe; skewers; Plant sticks; nice weather.

Extend the season by pulling on

You can extend the growing season by pulling the plants indoors for the propagator. You can do all around mid-April. Then it is too inclement outside to sow al. When the time is ripe to sow, around the beginning of May, your cuttings have a reasonable lead, the yield will be greater. When the first leaves appear, you can start weaning.

Rule number one is that you should not sow too thick, this is a real beginners trap. Mix the seeds with yellow, dry sand and sprinkle it as thinly as possible. You can see the white sand on the dark earth again you left with straw.

Rule two: Do not find the seed, but take first a part of. Try not directly thousand seeds also want to grow thousands of plants; you have to a few dozen plants enough to make a lot of model trees. You can also sow the spad over several weeks, from mid-April to mid-May. So you avoid that failed the entire crop by a cold, wet spring. Do the plants above the ground seed, you can send them quickly transplanting. This thins them directly, so that each cutting gets enough light, air and food

Here are cuttings planted in open ground.

Later they can be turned off in the ground, or optionally in planters

In this small bowls and pots, the plants can grow to attend further. Keep them warm, they cover with cling film or plastic. Most breeding boxes have a transparent cover. In good weather you can put them all out during the day. Keep the soil moist but not too wet. With a plant spray lets you control more than a watering can.

Have you grown the seafoam, you can replant them in early May, or if you want to grow indoors in pots:

Indoor growing in pots / planters

The pitfall of many is that scatters the seed in a flower box and everything that comes to want to become full-fledged model trees. It is better for all plants to prick a few times and to transplant in ever larger pots. Potting soil meets, do not give too much water and do not let the soil dry out.

Not a small plant directly into a large pot, the roots proliferate and you get a measly plant. Set each plant as light as possible, turn the pot every now and then in order to also allow the light to the other side. Rate too, especially within, each plant adequate room, at least 20 cm places away from each other.

From here you can sow the spot early May, this also do again with dry white sand and not all at once! Advance simply ground some loosening, fertilizing is not necessary and not good. Sprinkle and pss on it slightly to seed as thin as possible. The moist of the top layer is now the biggest concern. Because the fine seed is not too deep, you risk drying out things to dry soil. It is recommended there to provide some burlap sacks, rags or fleece, which can be kept moist by pouring with a fine sprayer. After approximately seven to 10 days, this cloth can be detached. Despite the fact that you have sparse, small cuttings will be provided good turnout, again too close to each other. They thin out at 15 to 20 cm. Throw away the pulled plants, or plant them again on an empty spot.

Protection against wind and weather

In the spring, but also at the end of the growing season can torrential rain and strong winds thwart the nursery. It would be ideal if you could make a tunnel cultivation of some PVC pipe for electricity or chicken wire and woven cloth or plastic film. This protects the plants and the growth is faster.

The tubes bend over a bed of 100 to 120 cm wide, about that you can stretch the foil with clothespins or clips. Just make sure you do every day as the film up to pour drought, weeding weeds in short, to pay attention to the plants in order to achieve a prosperous growth.

n this case, chicken wire , but PVC pipe is also possible. When the fabric / foil can be removed warm weather.

The delicate plants that have struggled after transplanting , still need protection from rain and sun.

The plants significantly to growth , the protection tunnel can be removed.

Turn now planting sticks in the trunk , so they need support and get nice straight stems

Closed for years, we have suffered from prolonged drought. It is desirable then to administer daily, pferably in the evening , water. Rainwater from a rain barrel is pferred, but water also complies . That’s all you need to watch still . Now the plants will develop without too much care and waiting for the end of August , early September.

Harvesting and drying

The plants begin to discolor the end of their growth in beautiful action burgundy , brown and yellow / orange tones. Also will make the plant seed , and the cycle around again.

It is now the end of August , early September

Harvest it! Of course you can harvest when the plant is in a later stage , but pfer still deserves the mature plant. Allows you to stand tall in the garden Teloxis , it will die , slowly disintegrating and falling apart ! Pull the plant up by the roots out of the ground and hang to dry in an airy , cool ( ± 18 degrees) place

Do not dry in the sun to avoid drying …

already done just that here, because there was no place for more elsewhere …

After drying must be removed the elongated growth leaves because they detract from the model tree as you let them down. They have off befor conservation, firstly to save pservatives. Secondly, because they, now that the plant is dry, are easier to remove. After the conservation they would be back some flexibility and resilience, giving you more trouble (or should do) to pull them. Use a large tweezers. The next step is:

the conservation

The conservation is done in different ways. See the article Natural materials on “More Information”.

alternative method

My method differs slightly from the other methods, like we are discussing it here. Spray already during the drying process several times a day in the plants with a spray bottle / sprayer plants, in which one-quarter and three-quarters glycerin water is mixed. This works very well and is a lot more economical. You can now enter any big tub with a glycerine mixture. Also, the time required, which must weeks each plant in the mixture, you can save as. The Zeeschuimbomen which were rebuilt in 2008 and 2009, are good resilience, so we love but this method. They are sprayed regularly during the storage time of the glycerin mixture.

Before you start creating a model tree, it is convenient to spray one last time. Then the twigs less likely to break down.

Keep the vial with water and glycerin in the fridge
