How A Water Tower Works

About how a water tower works.

This image shows typical piping for a water tower.  The water spout shown is generic with spouts varying in design.  The spout in this image is item F labeled “Zuraw Typu Austriackiego”.

The image is from page 66 in the book Jedrzejowskie Koleje Waskotorowe  written by Bogdan Pokropinski .  You can get it in several places on the web.

Water Tower Piping
The water in the tanks had to be heated to keep it from freezing. That was done by passing a chimney through the center of the tank.  And, of course, there was a furnace in the lower reaches of the tower.

I will be adding a video showing an engine taking on water.
