In 1903. Henschel und Sohn factory has released two locomotives designed for military narrow gauge railways. In the years 1903-1919 lasted for mass production of these machines, so-called. Brigaden Lokomotiven für heeresfeldbahn,in short Brigadelok. They were typical military locomotives for field rail service so they were marked military HF. A total of 2500 locomotives of this type were built. They were used during the First World War in East Europe.
They typically used with a width of 600 mm. After the war, the Polish State Railways used the HF steam locomotives in the years 1918-1970. They were used also used on railways in the forestry and sugar industries. They were withdrawn because of the difficulty in getting parts to repair them. Some of the machines are in Sochaczew,Skierniewice and Wenecja.
HF locomotives were low power – up to 60 hp and with a low axle load, about 4 tons.
They were able to navigate curves with a radius of 18 m They did this at the cost of having a complicated four axle chassis.
After the performance potential of the double locomotives, also called twins, was no longer sufficient a later Brigadelok was developed in the years 1904-05. The 75 hp D-coupled tank engine with Klien-Lindner hollow axles and the long, narrow chimney with the overestimated Kobel became the heeresfeldbahnlokomotive the First World War. From 1905-1919 about 2500 were built. To increase its range, a water tender was added.
