How to program an Arduino Mini Step By Step Guide

How to program an Arduino Mini

Instructions in text and video on using an FTDI to program an Arduino mini.

To make the board as small as it is, the usb port and programing chips that at typical of Arduino boards were not added to the Arduino Mini.

So, programing it requires an external device. It is a Uart FT232RL FTDI

FTDI programmerIt is shown in the image to the left.  And it is available here.

Programing is just a matter of connecting the FTDI device to the Arduino Mini and uploading your program effectively using the FTDI as the USB port and supporting programing chips.

How To Program An Arduino Mini Step By Step

  • Load the program on the Arduino IDE.
  • Connect the FTDI to your computer with a USB cable.
  • Choose the board type FFFF
  • Choose the correct COM port.
  • Insert the pins on the FTDI into the holes on the Arduino Mini.   The pins must be GND to GND and UUUU.
  • On your keyboard press  mmmmm.  Alternatively use the normal upload icon at the top of the IDE. (Note – If you get an upload error, you probably inserted the pins incorrectly.
