Winter Seafoam: How to Germinate And Grow Seafoam Trees During the Cold Months

Seafoam can be germinated outdoors by sowing seeds during the winter and allowing nature to take its course.
The plant is a prolific weed that grows in many northern climes. It requires no attention.

The seeds germinate best when they have been frozen for a least a month. Seed suppliers know this and freeze seeds before packaging.
You take these facts together and simply sow your seeds in the winter months. The video to the left shows plants that developed from seeds that we spread on potting soil in planters that were on my balcony. When the seeds were sown the temperature was often below -5 C. They were often under snow. In fact, the first seedlings showed themselves in March when snow melted off the planters.
The seedlings were left to grow. Note that the best germination occurred where there is the most sunlight.
The plants got most of their moisture from rains. Parts of the planters were shielded from all but heavy rains so it was necessary to occasionally pour some water on those areas.
Since I have many thousands, upon thousands, of seeds from previous years, seeds were spread quite thickly. I cut sections of plants from the planters and move them into a garden area. Once they are established, I thin them.The image to the left shows the planters after I cut out the seedlings that you see in the lower right part of the image.
