Chapter 2: Tools and Materials
Tools:
- Fine-tipped tweezers
- Super glue (cyanoacrylate) or tacky glue
- Fine mist spray bottle
- Sharp hobby scissors or clippers
- Toothpicks or skewers (for holding trees during work)
- Nitrile gloves (optional, for handling glue)
Materials:
- HO scale armatures (plastic, wire, sticks, or twigs)
- Seafoam plant material (also known as sea moss)
- Matte medium or diluted white glue
- Ground foam or fine flocking (for foliage)
- Spray adhesive or hairspray (unscented, extra hold)
- Primer and paint (optional, for coloring armatures)
- Scenic cement (optional)
Chapter 3: Understanding Armatures
You can use the following types of armatures:
Plastic Armatures
Often pre-shaped and textured, plastic armatures are lightweight and easy to paint.
Wire Armatures
Made from twisted floral wire, these are flexible and fully customizable in shape.
Stick/Twig Armatures
Natural twigs provide great realism and texture. Choose ones with branching that resembles tree forms.
Natural Wood (Root or Dried Herb Stems)
Roots or dried stems from plants like thyme can be used effectively as miniature trees.
Tip: Regardless of the armature type, choose ones scaled for HO (1:87) and avoid overly thick trunks.
Chapter 4: Preparing Seafoam for Use
- Inspect and Trim:
Break or cut seafoam into smaller pieces. Each should resemble a branch structure—natural, airy, and not too dense. - Soften if Necessary:
If seafoam is brittle, mist lightly with water and let sit for a few minutes before shaping. - Optional Pre-coloring:
Lightly spray seafoam with diluted burnt umber or dark green paint to mute its natural yellow-green tone.
Chapter 5: Attaching Seafoam to Armatures
Step-by-Step:
- Secure the Armature:
Use a toothpick, clamp, or pin to hold the armature upright while working. - Apply Glue to Seafoam Base:
Dab a small amount of super glue to the end of a trimmed seafoam piece. - Attach to Armature:
Gently press the seafoam into place on the outer branches. Start from the bottom and work upward. - Hold Until Set:
Hold for a few seconds until glue sets. Super glue works fastest; tacky glue allows more repositioning. - Build in Layers:
Add smaller seafoam pieces to create a full canopy. Vary branch sizes for realism.
Chapter 6: Strengthening and Sealing
Once all seafoam is attached:
- Spray with Matte Medium:
Lightly mist the entire tree with matte medium to stiffen and bind. - Let Dry:
Let the tree dry fully—overnight is best. - Repeat if Needed:
Apply a second coat for additional strength.

- Add Foliage:
Spray the tree with adhesive, then sprinkle ground foam or flocking to simulate leaves. - Tone It Down:
